Welcome from Jeniel Smith

In the words of the late great Langston Hughes, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”. I have had my share of adversity and challenges growing up on the Southside of Chicago. At a very early age I was exposed to drugs, alcohol, and domestic violence. Despite the odds that were stacked against me I found an outlet through reading and educating myself. In addition to finding freedom through books I can remember very intimate conversations with God in which he clearly showed me that my conditions that I lived in then would not in anyway dictate or diminish the call for greatness that had been placed on my life.

I am a product of the Chicago Public School system along with the City Colleges of Chicago. I received my high school diploma from Lindblom Technical High School. Immediately following high school I became a student at Malcolm X College One of the City Colleges of Chicago where I received an Associate’s Degree in Mortuary Science. I was fortunate to be able to attend National Louis University for both my undergraduate and graduate programs receiving my Bachelors in Health Care Leadership and Master in Adult Continuing and Literacy Education.

Within my professional career I have had the privileged to work with various community and faith based organizations. These opportunities have made it clear that my capacity and ability to help uplift, encourage and enlighten individuals is a ministry. A great deal of the clients I have been able to connect with are young adults in the areas of self esteem, artist development, post secondary preparation, human sexuality and development along with sexual abuse education and prevention to name a few. I have served as an Education Specialist for Upward Bound at Malcolm X College and as a Group Service Coordinator for pregnant and parenting teen moms where I was a parent educator for a bi-weekly support group. I have received training through the Ounce of Prevention and Parents As Teachers.

Along with building my professional resume God has made it possible to also build a strong artistic resume as a multi talented singer, songwriter, and host. I got my start singing with various groups, church, and community choirs. I was most recently seen in the production Suga Foot Blue at the Dusable Museum of African American History. I have been performing professionally for over seven years seen in Congo Square's production of "Nativity" at the Goodman Theatre where I played the role of Johasheba. Other productions included on my resume are "Eyes" A musical adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God at the ETA Theatre, Don't Make Over; A Tribute to Dionne Warwick at The Black Ensemble Theatre, Dreamgirls and YRT at the Chicago State Breakey Theater to name a few. I was also a 2007 Black Excellence Nominee for Outstanding Actress for the role of Grandma Lee in the production of Bedtime Story at the ETA Theater. I have truly enjoyed serving as the host for such events as the Black Theater Alliance Awards and the American Legacy Challenge sponsored by American Legacy Magazine and American Family Insurance.

This is only the beginning for me. With God and the help of my life coach the sky is the limit. It is important for you to know that the same call for greatness is on your life. Why wait? Let’s do this together today.
