Relationships are meant to enrich our personal lives. It is in these spaces that we should learn trust, encouragement, acceptance, unconditional love, & celebration. In a word, relationships should be REST.
We take vacations to get away; but they still require some work. Research, planning, saving, and negotiating are components of a great get-away. You cannot have a relationship without work either.
- RESEARCH: Do your research to learn what is important to you & those whom you are connected to. This means observing them & being aware of things that enrich and hurt them.
- PLAN: Deliberately schedule time out for yourself. You must bring yourself into a relationship willing to share, not resentful. Next, plan activities together with those who are important to you. Quality time doesn't just happen--(that's why it's called quality & not quantity time!) It must be prioritized, especially in our busy world.
- SAVE: You will have to save & preserve some energy to lavish on your loved ones. Don't exhaust yourself in the world & come home drained and disgusted. Be mindful that those at home deserve the best of your energy & attention as well.
- NEGOTIATE: You may have the perfect vacation in mind, but I guarantee that is the only place it is a reality--in your imagination! Relationships are about relating...not dictating. Be flexible. Learn to see situations and experiences from your loved ones' viewpoints. Compromise--without sulking and complaining--can create a new corporate dream that you can work to make a reality.
So even though it is not effortless, your relationship can be all-inclusive! In your circle of support, you can find love, encouragement, passion, humor, and fun. It doesn't have to be stressed, relationships can mean rest!
