Are you living on standby?

Saturday, May 1, 2010

During a recent trip to Phoenix, I decided to intentionally miss my flight for a later departure. I take the redeye back to Detroit frequently, and it’s never full. Getting a standby seat shouldn’t be a problem…or at least I thought.

Instead of the old standby program,
Delta Airlines now offers confirmed same-day seats. Simply call the airline three hours before your desired departure, pay fifty bucks, and you can go to the airport confident that you’re getting on board. Sounds good, right? But when I called, there were no seats.

The agent on the phone couldn’t do anything, but I refused to accept defeat. I headed to the airport trusting that I’d receive a dose of favor and end up on that flight. After thinking of every possible option, it dawned on me that airlines will upgrade frequent flyers if there are available seats in first class. If they get bumped up, then I could get their coach seat. And that’s exactly what happened.

Do you find yourself in a situation where things aren’t going the way you need them to? It could mean that’s not the path you’re supposed to pursue. But are you giving up too easily? Get creative and look for ways to get over, under or around the obstacles. I could have thrown in the towel when the agent told me there were no seats – but I needed to get home. So with prayerful consideration, I moved forward expecting to get on that flight.

Maybe your original plan didn’t work. Or it’s taking longer than you wanted. Staying paralyzed definitely won’t get you there. If you believe it’s worth pursuing, get out of standby and write your own ticket. There may be uncertainty, but do what you CAN DO with a positive attitude of expectancy and watch things take off!
